History of the fortress of Yeni-Kale
Such an unusual name for the Russian people "Yeni-Kale" is translated from Turkish as a "new fortress" and is explained by the fact that initially the local territories belonged to the Turks. In the years 1699-1706. they built their own citadel, and in 1771 they surrendered the Russian army without a fight. According to the Kyuchuk-Kainardzhy agreement Kerch along with the fortress retired to Russia in 1774
At the dawn of its history, the Ottoman fortress was a powerful three-tier structure, protected from the ground by an earthen rampart and a moat. It was built in the form of an irregular pentagon and occupied different levels in height. The moat that surrounded the citadel on three sides was an additional tier. At the corners were placed half-bastions, some of which protruded from the walls for the purpose of better shelling. The fortress of Eni-Kale housed two powder stores, an arsenal, as well as living quarters, a reservoir of water, a bath and a mosque.
In the 19th century, the citadel was not used as a military facility, it housed a military hospital. After the hospital ceased to function, the fortress finally came to desolation. The Great Patriotic War brought her back to the ranks of strategically important objects: the paratroopers fought here bitter battles with German soldiers. Soon after the end of the war, the fortress was restored, and it was recognized as an architectural monument.
