Ships in Helsinki, Finland

In 2013, the number of cruise ships and their travels across the Baltic Sea beats all record figures. On this occasion, the Finnish authorities took a number of additional measures to stimulate cruise tourism in the region.

The renewal of seaports and the creation of modern infrastructures are only a small part of the factors that are favorable for the development of the cruise industry in Finland. Coupled with an extensive network of routes, modern equipment of ships and duty-free trade, sea cruises along the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea attract more and more tourists. Several Finnish companies even had to borrow a few liners to fully meet the demand generated during the summer season

Viking line increased the tourist flow by 10% in the first half of the year, mainly thanks to its new vessel on the Turku-Stockholm line. Its regional competitor, Tallink Silja, also recorded a significant increase in travelers over the same period. Accordingly, both companies increased not only revenue from ticket sales, but also profit from sales of goods in duty-free boutiques. Only one alcohol product was sold to regional operators 25% more than in the first six months of last year
