A little history
The first mention of Dinan dates back to the 11th century . In the 13th century fortifications and towers appeared here, and then for Dinan the troops of two Jeanne fought hard during the Hundred Years War - in history this episode entered as "war for the Breton heritage" . Dinan was very conveniently located: it was easy to get to the water from the coastal Saint-Malo, and it was a well-trodden trade route . So all the goods from the foreign ships of Saint-Malo harbor one way or another passed through the D Nan, which, naturally, gave impetus to the further prosperity of the city . But with the advent of the railways, the meaning of Dinan as a staging post came to naught, and since then it began to develop as a resort where the English loved to go on vacation .
Entertainment, excursions and attractions Dinana
Dinan is located on a hill that rises above the wide Ransom, rising more than 70 m. The medieval wall of Dinan is considered the longest in all of Bretoni. Its length as a whole is approximately 2, 5 km. According to the legend, in the entire history of the city this wall was never taken by storm. The defensive fortifications of the city are surprisingly well preserved, and so far you can see the central tower, more than a dozen towers of the wall and the majestic city gates.
The central tower - the dungeon - is a powerful structure almost 35 m high, built in 1380 and fortified in the 15th century with the help of a gate and a clock tower. All this building together is called the castle of Dinan. It is sometimes called the castle of Queen Anne, but this is historically incorrect: the queen was born much later. And here was the residence of the Breton Dukes, later - the prison, and now the historical museum is opened.
- Find the oldest half-timbered house in the city, which is at least 520 years old.
- If possible, get on the medieval Day of the fortress walls in July
- Buy as a souvenir some image of the Breton grandmother in the traditional headdress
The main church of the city is the Church of the Savior erected in the 12th century . More precisely, started: the whole basilica was never completed . The construction was started in fulfillment of the vow and with the funds of the local nobleman de Roux, who promised to celebrate a safe return from the Crusade in this way . But the construction process was more expensive than de Roo believed, and stretched I for many centuries . As a result of this, the church began to look very eclectic: in its appearance there are also Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque lines . In the windows of Saint-Sauveur Cathedral one can see amazing stained-glass windows . And one of the main treasures - the heart of the heroic knight Bertrand du Gecklen, a local native who became famous in the 14th century by a considerable number of exploits .
Also more interesting is the younger Gothic-Renaissance church of St. Malo of the 15th century built . The former church of this saint stood outside the city wall and was destroyed during the war with the English . New decided to build in the city center, and work on it continued from the late 15th to the second half of the 19th century; and even after the French Revolution the church finished, leaving the bell-tower .A double Renaissance portal and Gothic decorations form the appearance of the church, and in the interior there is a magnificent chorus of more than 20 meters high, an altar that is believed to occupy the highest point in the city and beautiful stained-glass windows . In particular, depicting the arrival in Dinan Anna of Breton .
The old town of Dinan has the charm and charm of any medieval old town and exactly the same pedestrian attraction . Here you can wander long enough and never leaving far away . It is noteworthy that the l'Apport house on the street with the same name, on its corner, above the first floor, you can see the bishop's sculpture . Merciers Square, which is not very wide, but especially beautiful due to the preserved wooden shopping arcades on the first floors of some s buildings . The most popular tourist street - Zherzyual: it is, of course, paved and descends down on an incline of 30 degrees plus . From Mersers this street leads directly to the Old Bridge .

The 15th century clock tower of the tower rises above the Old Town, well visible thanks to the cone-shaped spire. This is one of the business cards of Dinan, donated by the city of Anna Breton. Inside the tower you can get to climb 158 steps and see the city from above; in clear weather, even the mountain of Saint-Michel is visible from here. Nearby is Geshlen Square, where markets are arranged on Thursdays
The old Dinan Bridge is characteristic and photogenic: it reminds its counterparts in a lot of French (and not only) cities . Stone, chunky, with thick supports and low arches, the bridge was built in the 15th century . Another monument of the city, though not so ancient, is a stone high viaduct across the Rance River . It was erected in the middle 19th century, one version - by Gustav Eiffel himself . The length of the bridge is 250 m, height - 40 m . Below the viaduct there is a city port with tourist and pleasure craft . And at the top, on the hill is a beautiful landscaped English garden of the 19th century, from which both bridges are very convenient to photograph . In the garden it is worth to inspect the rose garden "Petit Diabl" .
