A bit of history
As usual, at first Nevers was Roman, then became an episcopal city, after several times changing hosts from among Flemish and Burgundian nobility. In the 16th century, the first manufactory was opened here to produce faience wares of such amazing quality that they cost fabulously expensive. The style of these products is called - "Neverskaya blue."

Entertainments, excursions and attractions of Nevers
The Cathedral of Saint-Cyr in Nevers impresses with its picturesque Gothic style, but, unfortunately, in its present form is only a cue. The first cathedral on the site of the earlier Gallo-Roman sanctuary was built from the 10th to the 16th centuries with breaks for destruction and expansion, so that its appearance became quite eclectic, with elements of Romanesque and Oriental styles.
During the Second World War, the cathedral was destroyed virtually completely when bombarded by his own: the allied forces missed the railway station, and the strike fell on the city. The cathedral, in which three bombs exploded, was reconstructed for a long time. The creation of stained-glass alone took about 30 years, and work on them was completed quite recently. But today the windows of the cathedral look amazing: there are 130 windows painted in modern style, for the production of which more than 7 million EUR were spent.
The old city of Nevers starts right from the waterfront, and its winding narrow streets leave inland, built up by numerous houses of the 14th and 17th centuries . Attractive and very different stylistically St. Mary chapel, decorated in the spirit of the Baroque . And the Romanesque church of Saint-Etienne, built in the 11th century, is considered one of the most beautiful in Burgundy - not in last turn thanks to the fact that it is remarkably well preserved . The square of Europe on which it stands is the central focus of the city cafes . The 16th century St. Pierre Church is also worthy of attention not only with the frieze and the classical façade, but also with beautiful frescoes interior, drawn in the 17th century by artists from Italy . And, finally, it is worth mentioning the Church of Notre Dame, which is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site as part of the pilgrimage of St. James .
The ducal palace of Nevers Palais-Ducal was built in the 15th century, and in its architecture one can see both Romanesque and Gothic lines. Later, the castle was decorated with Renaissance windows on the oblique roof, and large fireplaces appeared in the interiors. After the French Revolution, the palace housed the Palace of Justice, and in the 20th century it was occupied by the city mayor's office. Some of the premises remained free, and today a tourist office and a museum are open, art events and exhibitions are held

There are also very well preserved fortifications of the 12th-13th centuries in Nevers that include thick Walls and powerful towers with gates . H Since the 16th century fortifications began to be gradually dismantled for building material for the growth of the city . But, as Nevers expanded eastwards, the fortification walls on the west side remained partially intact . In the second half of the 20th century, the city authorities acquired this part of the fortifications and arranged here the picturesque promenade, which is very interesting to walk . The route starts from the powerful protected gate Krue, passes through the rose gardens and romantic overgrown walls, the towers of Avr and Saint-Reverie, and ends at the Gogen tower that stands on the river bank . The latter was erected in the 12th century and has nothing to do with the post-impressionist painter .
Saint Gildar Abbey, which is now surrounded by a municipal park, is considered a landmark in the city and an object of constant pilgrimage. The main treasure of the abbey is kept in the gold-clad and crystal of the reliquary - it is the relics of St. Bernadette of Lourdes. The saint was a simple peasant daughter, who became an 18-fold witness to the apparition of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes. According to the legend, the phenomena were accompanied by different miracles. Following the order of the Mother of God, Bernadette took tonsure in the abbey and died here.
Another functioning monastery, which today is already within Nevers, is the abbey of Our Lady, founded in the 7th century. During the excavations in the monastery territory, graves dating back to the Carolingian era were found
Speaking of Nevers, we can not forget about the "Formula 1". Right outside the city for a long time passed an important stage of the Grand Prix of France F1 on the track Magny-Cours. Near the motor-racing track there is the Ligier Museum, where you can see a small collection of racing cars created by the French designer. Since 2008, the Grand Prix has not been held on the circuit, but there are still various auto, moto and contests here
Kitchen of Nevers
Historically, in Nevers, we raised special bulls of the "Charolais" breed with white skin color. These bulls were intended exclusively for meat. It was from them in the neighborhood began to make a dish with an uncomplicated name "beef in wine", which later along with wine glorified the region to the whole world. Today it is known almost to everyone as the famous "meat in Burgundy". And on the Maro farm, near the city, every year a world-wide exhibition of selling pedigree bull-calves takes place.

Neuvert Surroundings
The surroundings of the city are famous for quite predictable natural beauties: this is the Loire Valley .True, just upstream, to the city, the river looks completely unimportant, "chambery" . In Nevers, the river Nievre flows into it, and already from here the Loire spreads widely and freely . About 40 km north of the city a natural reserve of the Loire Valley, where you can admire the animals, especially the birds . And in the forest of Bertranger, even entertainment is organized for tourist groups in the form of wild mushrooms (although why the group is not very clear) .
And less than 20 km south of the city is charming I am the village of Apremon-sur-Allier, one of the "most beautiful villages of France" . The houses in this village on the border of Burgundy were built of local stone - the same one from which the Orleans Cathedral was built . In the interval between the two wars the initiative of two local residents, all the ugly houses were demolished, and in their place were built new, in the traditional style . But the main attraction of the Apremon-sur-Allier is the Flower Park near the Apremon Castle . The local garden is only about 20 years old, but he was designed according to the patterns of landscape design 18th century, with streams, meadows, unusual form of trees and arched gazebos . In the building of the former castle stables you can see the museum, where several old horse carriages are kept .
