Dol-de-Bretagne is a small town in the north of Brittany near La Manche - a place in many respects legendary, epic and, of course, an eerie old one. And although its population barely reaches 5,000 inhabitants, crowds of tourists and pilgrims flock here every year to enjoy the views of one of the oldest cathedrals in the land of proud Bretons.

In addition, Dol is halfway between St. Malo and Mount Mont-Saint-Michel, hotels and guesthouses are the most comfortable, and the cost of accommodation in them is an order of magnitude lower than in the above popular resorts.

A paragraph of history

Dole de Bretagne boasts a glorious and eventful history, because this city is considered one of the oldest in Brittany, and the first mention of it dates back to the 6th century. If you believe the legend, it was in Dole that the "father of the Breton nation" was anointed to the kingdom, the brave and wise Nominoe who ruled over these lands in 831-851

In the 10th century, Vikings already owned the stake - Olaf Lagman and Olaf Haraldsson, and the struggle with their predatory raids was led, among others, by the Duke of Brittany Alain II, also called Crooked Beard and Fox. In the 11th century, Dole de Bretagne remembers the repeated sieges of the Normans, including Wilhelm the Conqueror.

Infrastructure

The small town and all its main attractions, restaurants, hotels, banks and post office are concentrated in Rue Grande des Stuarts, that runs parallel to the cathedral. In the alleys that depart from this central "ryu", you can find a lot of decent restaurants in the typical Breton style - with the obligatory fachwerk on the facade, the cider in the menu and literally 4-5 tables by the big fireplace.

Office of Information is looking directly on the square in front of Cathedral of Saint Samson.

Entertainment, sightseeing and sightseeing Nost

The main attraction of the ancient city of Dol-de-Bretagne - a granite cathedral of St Samson of the 12th century, one of the finest examples of pure Gothic style of northern France. By the way, before the erection of the temple there was already a Romanesque cathedral, but it was destroyed by John the Landless in 1203. And he, in turn, was built on the ruins of the church, where they crowned the kingdom of King Brittany Nominoe. In a word, the place for all the inhabitants of the region is cult and revered.

The relics of Saint Samson and Maglouard are kept in the cathedral.

Even if you do not take into account the fact that Nominoe was proclaimed the ruler of Brittany, the cathedral is worth visiting only for the sake of the saint, after whom he was named. Saint Samson was a Gallic monk who brought the Gospel to the Bretons and became the first bishop of Dol-de-Brittany. And St. Magloire, whose relics are also kept in the walls of the temple, was his successor

If you believe the legend, it was in Dole that the "father of the Breton nation", bold and wise Nominoe, who ruled over these lands in 831-851.

In addition to the church, a string of half-timbered houses of the 15th century and the recently opened museum of medieval religious architecture "Cathedralekoscope" (cost of visiting 6 EUR) are attracting attention in the city.

A little further from the city center to the south is a picturesque park with a string of ponds, in which local people like to spend their time with. A little more to the south - and you will be rested in a menhir with a height of 9 m (Menhir du Champ Dolent). Ladies, be careful: if you go around it three times, you can conceive a boy. Fresh legend is unknown, but it's better not to take risks.

Another interesting attraction is outside the city, halfway to the sea is a bizarre outcrop of granite 65 m high called Mont Dol. Proudly towering above the swampy plain, a huge boulder is often called the "Devil's Claw". They say that here with a clawed creature in a terrible battle, Archangel Michael fought. Today, the top of the granite is crowned by a statue of the Madonna with the baby, and just below the hill is a tiny chapel.
