The small French village of Abondance, founded several centuries ago by monks from neighboring Switzerland, is located in the valley of the Drans River. In 2003, Abondance received the honorary medal "Land of Art and History" from the Minister of Culture for the rich historical past of the neighborhood.
On behalf of the valley, the name for the breed of local cows, distinguished by characteristic brown-white spots, also went. And since the milk of these alpine miracle cows has a special taste, they created the cheese of the same name - "Abondance" - with an amber-golden crust and a fruit-nut flavor.
Nevertheless, today this village is known not only for farm production, but and the slopes that have entered the network of the famous ski region of Portes du Soleil, which unites 12 ski villages and towns

The inhabitants of Abondance are the famous arboreal masters. It is believed that the dove, carved from pine by a local craftsman, brings well-being to the house. At the master class of the most famous village "sculptor" Gerard Burt, you can learn to carve and listen to the people's long-time love for working with wood. In the 11th century in the Abondance valley a small monastery was founded by Augustinian monks who had passed from the Swiss valley. Century later the monastery turned into an abbey, whose influence spread right up to the 17th century on all territories from Abondance to Geneva. Since the 18th century there are no more monks in the monastery, but places are available for visiting local and travelers. Photo of Abondance (9)
